Hi there! Thank you for dropping by and wanting to know a bit more about me.
I am an author and poet based in Gibraltar and in Kent, UK, shuttling cheerfully between the two depending on the needs of my family and my work, and sometimes, on my own needs.
I love writing, sometimes because I want to create something for publication and sometimes because I want to write something for myself. I love notebooks and have a number of different themed journals on the go at any one time.
I am also a professional writer and have won awards for my poems and short stories. I am a strong supporter of local writing in Gibraltar, running and collaborating in workshops and other literary events for the local community.
I am also very proud to be a member of the Medway Mermaids women's writing group, finding the group supportive and inspirational. If it were not for being a Mermaid, I might have never found the courage to write.
In 2018, I was selected as a judge in Gibraltar's annual poetry competition and the following year was asked to work on a panel of editors to produce Gibraltar's first ever anthology of Gibraltar poetry, a well-received text which has garnered a great deal of attention in other parts of the world including in the United States.
I’ve also worked with the Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation as a freelance newsreader for several years, and presented two seasons of “In Her Shoes”, a programme where I was privileged to chat with Gibraltarian women about their lives, achievements, inspirations and motivations.
One of the joys of being a writer is to be able to work independently and from home, and I have been working from home (or from an airport, or railway station, cafe or a bench in a park) long before the pandemic lockdown made the term fashionable. I have published articles in magazines and newspapers both in print and online, notably The Gibraltar Chronicle and Gibraltar Insight, produced content for a broad variety of websites, and I work with small businesses in a consultancy role to provide content for their websites, blogs, newsletters and other publications. I also proofread and edit manuscripts.
Aside from all that, I am a mother of six children, a grandmother of six grandchildren and wife to the infinitely patient Dave, who is a source of constant and stalwart support for my writing and creativity. Among my children, the literary gene continues unimpeded, with Carmen, a producer and director of theatre performances including musicals, having worked as a freelance journalist, content writer, and senior editor for her university magazine; Jessica, a talented photographer, creating artwork and visuals for websites, marketing and small business branding; and Ciara, a chartered forensic psychologist, and also a writer, specialising in academic research and non-fiction as well as also producing impactive short stories and novellas.
The family team is amazing and we help each other go from strength to strength. Together, Ciara and I wrote “Myth Monster Murderer”, a non-fiction book that took a long hard look at life as experienced by the victims of the notorious London murderer, Jack the Ripper, while Jessica and I are working on producing a beautiful, illustrated coffee table poetry book that is going to be utterly remarkable.
I’m so happy that you have taken this glimpse into my writing world; take a browse through the pages of this site and reach out. Let’s start a conversation about writing, books, words, creativity and more!
